General discussion on choosing and keeping corals.

Xenia troubles

Postby las4444 » 07 Jan 2009, 07:10

One of my xenia colonies is starting to wither. It has spead into three other colonies and they seem to be doing fine. The withering colony is trying to split by three. In the past it looked heathy when doing this. Now, the second largest colony is on the withering path. At the same time, the smallest ones are doing fine. All the other coral species looks fine. It seems as they get larger they wither away. Is it possible that there is a lack of some substance in the tank that they are in greater need of?

I keep my dkh @ 8-9 and calcium at 400. These parameters keep the coraline growing but NOT out of control.

Sg is 1.024 and PH 8.3. The last time they looked like this my dkh was low at 6-7. Once I got it back up they looked fine. Last night I added more CH to my top off water to get it up to 9 in the next couple of days. Today it is at 8. I don't thing this will fix it. Any thoughts?

My xenia goes through cycles like that as well. Generally when a stalk or two starts to look bad, I do a water change and it looks better by the following day. I think raising your dkh will help as well.

are you dosing iodine(/lugols)? I've had trouble finding a definitive research on xenia but that seems to be "the" popular additive . . .

My xenias go through tha5t, actually I have one doing it now... I typically do nothing, no water changes, nothing of the sort, and it comes back a few days later.

Have you added any new bulbs since you have seen the decrease in the xenia?

The original cluster is breaking off limbs and looking worse. The two offspring still look fine. I believe I will just need to remove it.

On the bright side. A while back some of you ansered some questions about my mushrooms. After moving them and keeping them in a group. They are hudge. The largest is at 5" across and the small ones are growing fast.

Thats great on the shrooms. Xenia can be weird like that. Mine was literally taking over the whole back of my tank, then after changing my lights and some flow most of it died off. I am greatful for that, but I did like the look while it lasted.
