PH Low....

Postby Shock » 28 Dec 2008, 20:46

I did a water test 2 weeks ago, first time in like 3 months. tank is exactly the same as always, no trace of no2/3, ammonia, and my pH is low. it stays pretty low around 7.6-7.8. What can I do to fix this? it doesn't seem to be bothering anything, everything is doing GREAT! i started out with 5 red mushrooms beginning of July, and i have about 25 individual ones now. all fish are fat and happy.

Hey Jason,

How often do you change water?

You can try to dose some buffer, that might work. If it doesn't budge, you might have high carbon dioxide levels, which decrease pH. Do you have your house/apt closed up most of the time? You could try running some outside air to your system, via an air stone. A cheap way of trying to raise pH, and might be easier/safer than dosing buffer.

You could also try and drip kalkwasser. I have never tried that yet. My pH stays around 8.0-8.1

Honestly.... every month if im lucky, last one was 2 months. I only do it when it looks like it is dirty. Other than that, I let it go. I have some buffer, I tried it in the past. it lasted for a day or so, Maybe i will pick up a airpump, and set it outside (other side of wall from tank) and see what it will do, put the air stone in the refugium to hide those hideous bubbles!

Thanks brad. Honestly, its not a HUGE concern with me... everything seems to be doing great, so why fix it if its not broken... i just would like to see it a bit higher. ill give the airstone a try in the next week or so.

I've found with my tank I have to dose buffer on a consistant (if infrequent) basis in order to keep the PH above 8.0. But that has only been since I started using RO/DI water. What is your Carbonate Hardness? If that is low, then your PH won't stay up.
