Rychek's 90g Mixed Reef

Postby Rychek » 15 Dec 2008, 16:30

So after adding 5 ricordia mushrooms to my tank and doing some fragging and trading, I decided to reaquascape. I've been a bit busy with the new child lately, but pics will be forthcoming soon. :)

Before I get going on what has changed in my tank, I suppose I should give a little background. I started in the hobby with a 55g tank in November of 07. After losing all of my fish to an Ich treatment (yeah, it wasn't the Ich, but what I did to try to kill the Ich that did them in), I let my tank go fishless for a couple months then in May of 08 I moved everything into my current 90g setup.

My tank is equipped with a custom Calfo style overflow that drains out the back of the tank through 2 2" pipes. I have a 30g long sump with three chambers (modeled after reefbum's DIY thread: viewtopic.php?f=79&t=14). I'm running a Reef Octopus 150 needle wheel skimmer, Vistherm Stealth heater, 2 Hydor Koralia power heads (#2 and #3) and an IceCap 660-009 retrofit for lights (4 T5 bulbs in a homemade canopy).

I'm currently running a light bioload for a tank this size with only 7 fish. I've got a pair of clowns (an Ocellaris and and a Percula), a lawnmover blenny (no tank is complete without a blenny), Green Mandarin (she is fat as a pig and eating frozen brine too), Firefish, Purple Firefish and a Flame Angel. I currently have one SPS coral and many Zoanthids, a couple of Palythoas, a pair of Protopalythoas, some mushrooms and Xenia.

Now for the pics!

No, I've never had rics before. I've been wanting to get some and found a killer deal ($10 each!) so I bought 5. I'm waiting on the camera to free up so I can take pics and post them. The wife has commandeered it so she can look at pics from last night. :D

Good luck with them, I bought one about 6 mnths ago and it finally split last month. This is the first success I have had in keeping them. I have had numerouss ones in the past only for them to melt away within a couple of months. I have mine about 3" above the sand bed with fairly good flow. It has actually taken 6 mnths for it to split. When I bought it it had 2 mouths on it.

Compared to my CSS 65, the Octo 150 is the best thing since sliced bread! :) It produces a lot of dark, nasty smelling skimmate, so I'm happy. The only draw back is the pump. I have to blow into the venturi line after turning it on, otherwise the pump won't start properly. However, despite the pump's flaw, I'm loving the results.

Thanks Gary. I've got a few multi-mouth (one has 3 mouths) rics. Come to think of it, I believe only one of them doesn't have multiple mouths. I'm working on finding good places for everything still. I have a lot of prime realestate in my tank, but it's rather high and bright. Not the best combo for zoas, palys and shrooms. :)
