Red People Eaters....dying?

Postby Brandon » 27 Apr 2009, 19:20

I got three red people eater heads about two months ago and recently two heads have died and the other has not come out for few days. Water parameters are good and all other corals are fine so kinda stumped on why these guys died. I did notice two little unkown crabs roaming on the rocks which are probably not reef safe...havent been able to catch them. I dont think this is the reason but this is first time I have had people eaters so wondering if anyone had any ideas. I have moved them to other locations in tank but no love........they were to nice why they lasted Image , hopefully this one head comes back.

Thanks

Have you noticed anything on them like nudibranchs, or any tiny white specks on it?
Personally I would dip it just in case of nudi's or others bugs on it. It could be the crabs. Generally any crab can cause problems in your tank. The best way to make sure the crabs are reef safe is to check and see if the ends of the claws are pointed or very blunt. If they are pointed I would remove them from the tank.

Here is a link on some zoa pests and diseases.

Looks like they are Xanthidae crabs which are not good but they are very small Image Guess i need a pest trap or something impossible to catch otherwise........

The dip is a good idea. don't move them around so much. When it opens try target feeding it. Is it in a high flow area?

Its in a medium flow area one of the heads has starting to come back out which is good sign.

Soo...two heads died but now I have three new ones growing plus one that survived. Never figured out why they died but at least they are coming back better than ever.
