Welcome to Aquarium Fish Forum, Fishloverone!

First off, im a salty guy myself, so I Dont know much about fresh, but im going to take a stab at it and see if I can help.

To better assist you, some more details about your setup can help us. What size tank do you have, what type of filtration, how much do you feed, how long has the tank been set up and what kind of test kits do you use to test ammonia and nitrite?

As far as getting these things under control, without know anything about your setup, I would recommended doing frequent water changes, maybe 25-50% of your water volume once a week (or maybe twice a week) until things get under control. If its a rather new tank, its likely the tank is going through a cycle.

Fishloverone,

Daily water changes (15 - 25%) using dechlorinated water. Once the beneficial bacteria in the aquarium builds up sufficiently, your levels will drop to zero. Good Luck

Definately Invest in a good Reverse Osmosis/ De-ionizer unit. Also make sure to Syphon the gravel while doing your routine water changes.
