I have ICH!

Postby okcomputer » 26 Feb 2009, 23:11

Just added some new fish 5 days ago, the new blue ram has ich pretty bad. I used Mardel coppersafe and raised the temp to 85 degrees. Anything else I should do? Would it be more harm or good to remove the Ram? Thanks!

Whew! I saw your post in the other forum and I was going to tell you to stop sleeping with your fishes and hope the Ich goes away but I'm glad to hear it is a fish that has it instead

Just kidding. Welcome to the forum! I think you have come to the right place!

I suppose the good news is that your situation is very very common considering the fact that your fish are newly acquired so it is very possible that you are doing things right and it was the stress of transporting your new friends home that has opened the window for these parasites. However, it's probably a good idea to make sure that you are doing everything you can to keep your fish healthy since a healthy fish is not a good target for Ich.

As for your current situation, I have to admit that I have a bad outlook when it comes to copper so all I can say is be very careful with it. It is my understanding (and my experience as well) that this stuff is just as toxic to everything in your tank as it is for the Ich so you are basically trying to walk a fine line between having enough but not too much copper present to get the results you want. Otherwise I would say that Ich is a good test of our patience and while all of the white spots may disappear from your fish relatively quickly, you aren't really out of the woods and should keep treating for a couple weeks or so longer. In my experience with copper - which I used twice - it does seem to work quickly but as I'm sure you already know, the treatment is aimed at the individual parasites that we cannot see so appearances can be misleading.

Other than that, I'm sure you would be wise to focus heavily on reducing any stressors that might exist in your tank since your fish are already dealing with a lot...to include making sure that you have a lot of water movement at the surface of your tank because both the warmer water and the meds mean that there is less oxygen available.

Again, welcome to the forum! Even if I wasn't biased, I would have no problem telling you that there are a lot of great people here and I can all but guarantee that you can find answers to any aquatic question you might have. Feel free to ask anything and definitely keep us updated as to your progress since I'm sure we are all pulling for you!
