General discussion on choosing and keeping Saltwater fish.

Hawaiian Blue Streak wrasse

Postby thincat » 16 Dec 2008, 21:04

Hello all, I finally took my Blue streak wrasse out of QT and put it in my DT. While in QT I got it to eat Zooplex, blood worms and flakes. I have a terror in the main tank, a Bi-color Basselet, so I taped a mirror to the tank and it was busy fighting himself instead of the new fish. I heard that blue streaks are hard to keep, but mine eats like a pig so I have my hopes high on this one... :?:

Hey Thincat! First off, Welcome to AquariumAddicts!

What size tank do you have?

I have heard of the mirror technique but have never tried it, glad to know it works at least! :)

I have heard of bi-colors being aggresive to like body types. I would monitor the situation closely....

Also glad to hear you are using a QT!

I hope he fairs better than most others. You can sustain him for a little while on prepared foods, but he will eventually die of malnutrition. These wrasse need a specific diet of parasites to sustain a long and healthy life. They are cool little fish that does its job well. Good luck with him.

Hey thincat ~ welcome to the forum!

If we are talking about the same blue streak wrasse then yes, they are pretty well known for being picky eaters and hence, hard to keep. From what I've read and some of the people I have bumped into, I think that more people are starting to have better luck with getting them to eat prepared foods; including myself. Without getting into my own opinions on the subject, I'd say that there is still some ethical dilema with keeping them because they provide a vital function in the wild. Point being, if you haven't already, don't be shocked to find people who disagree with your keeping one.

It does sound like you are off to a good start though. I'd keep an eye on their eating habits and maybe try feeding some finely chopped beef heart preparation once in a while.

:D Looks like everyone was posting at the same time and as usual, I was the slowest. I guess great minds do think alike :D

Thank you all for your replies, I have a 65 gallon display tank with a 25 gal sump. I was watching this fish at the lfs for about a month and it was eating there very well. I just got through QT..14 days and the fish is fat and eats out of my hand. Very friendly, I fed it all sorts of marine food and he eats everything, I am hopeful. So 30+ at the fish store, 14 days in QT,not bad. I will keep you all posted. Beef hearts???? do you soak it in any vitamins or what?

Good, glad to know he is feeding well, and I hope he has a long successful life.
