General discussion on choosing and keeping Saltwater fish.

Future Stocking options

Postby Rychek » 18 Oct 2009, 11:31

I've got a long and shallow 145 gal tank (72"x24"x~16") that I'll be setting up in the not too distant future (once decided what color to paint the walls and get them painted). It will be a reef as I will be moving the contents of my current 90 gal tank. I've had a few livestock changes recently, so my current list looks something like this:

1x Purple Firefish
1x Chalk Basslet
1x Randall's Shrimp Goby
1x O. Clown
1x Percula Clown
1x Flame Angel

Fish I will be adding in the future:

?x Bangaii Cardinal (I'm rehoming one for a friend and need to get a few more for the breeding project I've been contemplating)
2x Mandarin Dragonets (once the pods are establish really good)

Fish I really need help choosing:

Blenny (not Sailfin/Lawnmower)
Tang (not Yellow)
Any other non-venomous. reef-safe fish.

I'm interested in all opinions and suggestions because I know I haven't thought of it all. :)

make sure you buy your mandarins/dragonets as male/female pairs. Otherwise, one will likely kill the other (or one will make the other jump-tank)... even in a tank the dimensions your talking about.

As far as tangs are concerned for a tank that size, have you looked into Nasos, purple tangs, des. sailfin tangs, white face (NOT powder brown/white cheek) tangs, achilles tangs, etc? I would personally stay away from sohal and clown tangs (due to venom) and powder blues (because they can be psychotic towards everything for weeks/months when one more fish is added, even after new fish is removed!)

Given the tank's size, if your scaping will accomodate have you also considered possibly mixing dwarf angels or doing a harem?

what about reef safe wrasses (cleaner, 6 line, etc)?

a school of anthias might be a nice addition too once the tank is extremely established.

I would look into an achilles or sailfin. I love my Sailfin Tang. Beautiful fish. I recently added an Orchid Dottyback. Quite a striking fish.
