Device for Stocking Freshwater Aquariums: FishsheetA6

Postby MOA » 20 Aug 2009, 20:02

Hello,

Most online users call me MOA (Math-Only Aquarium) and I have been working on a project for a number of years regarding the dynamics of stocking aquariums. As most of us aquarists know, stocking an aquarium requires many considerations, but many of the common stocking guidelines fail to represent even a small fraction of the factors that go into making a successful aquarium. For instance, many new aquarists learn the inch-per-gallon rule and begin to stock their tanks by it. Some of them do fine; the ones with the 10-inch Oscar in the 10-gallon aquarium are in for a shock. Since the common guides are not very specific and new aquarists tend to avoid doing extensive research, I have developed a device that incorporates many of the important factors that affect stocking capacity: FishsheetA6, a spreadsheet file available at the following website (second page):

The reason why I am posting this information is that I would appreciate some feedback from my fellow aquarists on its functionality. I appreciate all comments and suggestions, but please bear in mind that this device is for new aquarists and thus is not meant to cover breeding tanks or advanced designs. Please let me know what you guys think.

Cheers,

MOA

Hey MOA - welcome to the forum. I believe we have run into each other on some other sites over the past couple years...or if not, I've seen other, similar projects. It looks like you have assembled a lot of information, which is great, and I'm interested to hear what others might have to say about it. I admit that I get skeptical when I come across a single solution to what can be a relatively complex issue but it would be great to chat about it and see what you might have to say to other's reactions.

Thanks for sharing!

Tommy Gun,

Thanks for having an open mind. I admit that it is not perfect and that is why I value the opinions of people like yourself.

Hello,

It has been a while, but I have changed quite a few things and am now in the middle of four to five projects. I have updated the stocking calculator (now on FishsheetA7.Version2), am conducting a survey to validate an alternative method of assessing tank efficiency, am working on a new approach to compatibility questions (though I have hit a couple snags), and am finally expanding my species selection for Fishsheets. Of course all this is not the reason why I am here. I'm here to ask just one question: Do fish laugh?

Have Fun,
